4 steps to landing the job of your dreams

Here at Adzuna we know a thing or two about showing your best self on a job application. We also know how to make the hiring manager jump for joy at the fact that you are the best candidate for the position! At the same time, you just might be the best candidate for a job in the whole country, but what happens if you are not impressionable on paper? The chances of you landing an opportunity to interview for the job are slim to none. There is no hope when there is no interview, right? Here are some tips to land you that interview you’ve been dreaming of for months.

  1. Contact the recruiter

It is the twenty-first century and we are in a time where all of our messages and emails are seen and sent through a computer screen. So, to be that one in a million in the job-hunting scene you should get on the phone and get in contact with a recruiter. Remember to prepare your pitch ahead of time and focus on the job requirements – especially on how you are able to benefit them! Express how your qualifications and passions would be an asset to the company and focus on the needs of the potential employer – not yours!

  1. Cover letters

Every type of resumé should be accompanied with a cover letter tailored to address the job requirements. When you write a cover letter, make sure to focus on how you will benefit the company. Finish the letter with a statement about how you would like to contact them in a couple of days and discuss the possibility of an interview. If they end up reaching out, treat that crucial phone call as if you are in an interview. They could just be looking for some preliminary information that would confirm your suitability for the position.

  1. Follow up
  • Do not leave positions that you  have applied for unattended. After you have sent in a resumé, make sure you initiate a follow-up call after about a week. Make sure to (re)introduce yourself and express how excited you are about the position.
  • If a telephone number isn’t available, send an email – make it brief, blunt, and keep it to the point. It is important to remember to express how qualified you are and emphasize how your skills are more than right for the position
  • Lastly, if they have asked you  to call back later then try to establish a timeline for an interview, or if need be, leave a backup number for them to reach you at!
  1. Keep track of applications

Another key point is that you need to make sure that you are keeping track of all the applications you apply for as you contact the people, or groups, in charge of hiring folks. It is important to note:

  • who that person is,
  • information such as interview timelines and deadlines,
  • and any other information that might be of use to you!

It matters to keep track of applications: you should be able to provide specific details about the positions you have applied for and, more importantly, elaborate on what you wrote in your cover letter in the case a specific company calls you!
