Ever wanted to work for an inspirational female leader? In the US, 13 million businesses are owned by women (41%) and these businesses employ 9.4 million workers.

We’ve found ten incredible women who are doing amazing things here in the US. From fighting injustice and creating a more equitable world, to improving access to healthcare, these women are people you should definitely want to work for. 

 

Keely Cat-Wells

C Talent

Keely is a powerhouse entrepreneur and disability activist. She’s worked with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. She’s even an advisor board member at Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation!

Her company, C Talent, works to place disabled talent into roles, and they’ve successfully placed thousands of disabled people into jobs at the likes of Savage X Fenty, HBO, and Nike. 

In 2022, C Talent was acquired by the creative agency Whalar and Keely remains as founder and president.

Keely is definitely a woman to watch!

Whitney Wolfe Herd

Bumble 

Whitney was previously vice president of marketing and co-founder of Tinder. After a fallout with her fellow founders, she went it alone and set up rival company Bumble in 2014.

In 2021, Wolfe Herd became the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire after taking Bumble public. It’s been estimated by Forbes that her net worth is $1.5 billion. 

As well as being the founder and CEO at Bumble which is headquartered in Austin, Texas, Wolfe Herd is also a mother to two young sons.

Anne Wojcicki

23andMe 

Anyone who’s ever watched Our Father on Netflix will understand the concept of 23andMe. With some simple saliva swabs, customers unlock key information about their DNA including their health and characteristics. 

Founded by Anne Wojcicki and Linda Avey in 2006, the successful entrepreneurs have gone on to acquire over $700,000 in funding. 

Success runs in the family, with Anne’s youngest sister Susan Wojcicki currently CEO of YouTube.

Emily Weiss

Glossier 

Glossier originally began as Weiss’s popular blog, Into the Gloss, where predominantly women were interviewed in their bathrooms, revealing the contents of their shelves and medicine cabinets. After achieving viral popularity, Emily sought venture funding to launch her own products, which became the foundation of the much-beloved beauty brand Glossier. 

Now considered one of the most disruptive beauty brands in the world, Weiss recently announced her decision to step down as CEO and simply focus on her roles as executive chairwoman of the board.

Jasmine Crowe-Houston

Goodr

Goodr is on a mission to end food waste. Collecting businesses’ edible food waste and donating it to local non-profit organizations. In the United States each year, we waste over 72 billion pounds of edible food, yet 54 million people are suffering from food insecurity.

Jasmine is an award-winning entrepreneur, TED Speaker, and leader, determined to solve food poverty with technology and logistics. She’s also the 35th black woman to raise more than $1 Million in venture capital.

Melanie Perkins

Canva

Founded in 2013 by Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht, and Cameron Adams when Perkins was just 25, Canva has grown to have offices in eight countries. 

Dropping out of her university degree to create a more accessible way of designing things online, Perkins is now reported to be one of the richest women in Australia. 

In the US, the company has offices, hubs, and remote opportunities dotted across Texas and California with its headquarters in sunny Sydney, Australia. 

 

Leah Solivan

TaskRabbit 

Ever bought home flat-pack furniture and then struggled to build it? There’s an app for that! Don’t feel like mowing the lawn? The same app can do both.  

TaskRabbit was co-founded by Leah Solivan (nee Busque), who was the company’s CEO for eight years. In that time, Leah scaled the company to 44 cities and raised more than $50 million. In 2017, Leah sold the company to IKEA. 

Now, Leah is a general partner at Fuel Capital where she invests in early-stage startups with the goal of supporting world-changing ideas.

Huda Kattan

Huda Beauty 

Kattan started her career as a makeup artist. While living in LA, her clients included Eva Longoria and Nicole Richie. 

In 2010, she set up a blog, filled with makeup tips, called Huda Beauty which in 2013 turned into a store that was an overnight success. The brand initially sold false eyelashes and even Kim Kardashian was a fan!

The company is now valued at $1.2 billion and makes $200 million in annual sales.

As well as building a successful beauty brand and being one of the most influential people on Instagram, Huda uses her business to support a number of philanthropic causes. She also petitions for beauty brands to advertise when images have been touched up, so as to not promote unrealistic beauty standards.

Jenn Hyman

Rent the Runway

Sustainability is so in season which is why Jenn Hyman co-founded Rent the Runway, a company focused on renting high-end fashion and accessories. 

Founded in 2008, the company has gone from strength to strength. Initially set up as a rental program for women who wanted to rent a special dress for a special occasion, the business now has a variety of subscription models where customers receive a set number of monthly shipments – it’s a closet in the cloud! 

In 2021, the business was just the 30th business to go public with a female CEO on NASDAQ and was the first ever business to go public with a female founder/CEO, COO, and CFO. This is a business where women are truly on top!
