ChatGPT: Friend or foe of recruitment?

Unless you’ve been living somewhere pretty remote, you’ve likely heard the term ‘ChatGPT’ swirling around. Coverage of ChatGPT is pretty wide-reaching and we’re seeing daily new applications, innovations and predictions about what the future may hold.

In a few words, ChatGPT is a chatbot that is capable of drafting human-like detailed responses and answers. In case you’re wondering, GPT is the acronym for Generative Pretrained Transformer, the AI fuel powering this robot.

What makes it stand out from the rest is its competency in writing – in terms of accuracy, originality (not even the most conventional plagiarism checkers can detect a thing from the text), its natural-sounding delivery, and the ability to create various content types (from haiku to thesis!). No wonder Elon Musk has to call it “scary good”.

As a tech-powered job search engine – of course, we’ve been keeping a close eye on the ChatGPT discussions and what they might mean for the future of recruitment.

The most common question that seems to be on everyone’s lips is: ‘Will ChatGPT be coming after my job?’ We look at how ChatGPT is impacting hiring departments and what it might mean for hiring managers and the wider recruitment industry in the future.

Will ChatGPT replace recruiters?

TL;DR: In a word, no. At least not in the near future. ChatGPT has huge potential to disrupt industries down the line as it can be a huge help in saving time for manual tasks, crafting job descriptions or improving talent acquisition processes.

However, for the moment, companies (and the people behind them) are still required to add personality, brand voice, and a tailored approach to stand out from the crowd when it comes to employer communications, marketing materials and recruitment decisions and processes.

Instead of panicking about what might be coming down the road, it’s a great time to experiment with this new technology and see how you can use it to your advantage. We’ve seen it said that ChatGPT in its current iteration is part researcher, part virtual assistant.

So how can you utilize it in your recruitment? We look at some of the innovative ways that ChatGPT can act as a friend, not. foe.

Aligning hiring needs and better understanding roles

As someone who might be responsible for managing hundreds of roles, from multiple teams from around the business, aligning hiring needs with the candidates you source is vital

ChatGPT is a great tool to lean on if you’re looking to understand specific roles and what those jobs might entail for your business. Not sure exactly what a Social Media Manager does every day? Looking to brush up on the more common skills and responsibilities of logistics workers to compare with your job descriptions? ChatGPT can help shine a light on the unknown so you feel better prepared when speaking with hiring managers and candidates.

Example prompt: Can you briefly explain what a QA analyst is responsible for day-to-day in their roles?

Crafting Job Descriptions

Speaking of job descriptions, if you’re looking to quickly create a baseline job description for your roles, ChatGPT can help speed up your processes and create complex job descriptions in just a few moments.

Prompt example: Can you write me a job description for a logistic worker that includes the most common skills needed and responsibilities

However, as we said before, ChatGPT can’t replace your brand and your personality. Sure, it gives you a fantastic starting point, but to really make it stand out – and attract top talent – your need to add your own brand and perspective!

Writing outreach emails to candidates

Searching for a high-quality candidate for an elusive role? Let ChatGPT take some of the strain out of email communications and ask it to whip up a quick outreach email to prospective candidates, asking if they’re interested in your role.

Example prompt:  Can you write me a polite email to candidates to thank them for their job application, let them know we’re reviewing their resume and then if successful the next step in the process would be a skills and competency test?

In just a few seconds, we have a pretty strong draft that we can work with, edit, tweak and improve on.

Interview Inspiration

Get a helping hand with planning your interview process and question list for candidates with the help of ChatGPT. If you’re looking for interview inspiration, you’re in the right place.

Example prompt: Can you provide me with a list of engaging questions to use in an interview for a logistics worker?

Creating inclusive job descriptions and language

Companies are continuously striving to create a more diverse and inclusive culture within their organisation. With unconscious bias often present, ChatGPT can be a sounding board ensuring your job descriptions are free of bias and make use of inclusive language to encourage a wider, more diverse candidate pool to apply.

Example prompt: What should I consider when writing a job description to ensure it’s free of bias and uses inclusive language?

You can even ask it to review your job description and make suggestions on how to make it more inclusive. Pretty handy!

For recruiters and hiring teams, what’s next?

Use ChatGPT to your advantage; think more friend than foe. By adopting, experimenting and making use of this innovative tool to improve the processes and outputs of your hiring efforts, you can free up your time so you can work more effectively, and have more time and energy to focus on:

  • Partnering with hiring managers more closely. It’ll allow you more time to understand exactly what they’re looking for and what their needs are
  • Assessing candidates beyond their resumes. The information on a resume doesn’t tell the full story of a candidate. The hiring manager can have time to better assess any important soft skills, their attitude, growth potential and much more.
  • Optimizing your hiring processes. Take time to understand improvements that can be made to your candidate pipeline. Review and optimize your metrics to make sure you’re performing at your best. Need some hiring metric inspiration? We’ve got that here
  • Negotiation time: When candidates move through the process to the negotiation stage, a recruiter’s role is critical in meeting both parties’ needs. With empathy being a key skill for negotiation, you have a lead on ChatGPT.

ChatGPT unlocks a whole lot of opportunity for businesses in general, for those hiring in volumes, it could be a real asset in helping you become more productive – and allow you to add more of a personal touch and experience for candidates.

The applications for ChatGPT are pretty impressive, and they’re only going to improve. But don’t fear, we’re not in Terminator territory…yet. Lean on Chat GPT to help make your recruitment more efficient and effective, freeing your time to focus on how to take it to the next level.
