The TikTok trend for ‘Lazy girl jobs’ explained

The “Lazy girl jobs” trend first emerged on TikTok in May 2023 and went viral this summer after The Wall Street Journal wrote an article about it. Even though #Lazygirljobs has now attracted more than 18 million global views, this workplace trend has faced its fair share of criticism.

In this article, we’ll explain what lazy girl jobs are, debunk its bad rep, explore the impact of the trend on the job market, and finally unveil the top-paying lazy girl jobs.

What are “lazy girl jobs”?

Lazy girl jobs are jobs where workers can quiet quit and easily achieve a good work-life balance, while earning enough to live comfortably.

These jobs usually allow flexibility, offering benefits like flexible hours, remote working or hybrid working options, and unlimited paid time off. They don’t typically require substantial responsibilities, including reporting to the management team and managing a large team. Jobs that require regular overtime or antisocial working hours are definitely on the blacklist of lazy girl jobs.

As catchy as the term suggests, this trend actually has nothing to do with slacking off at work.

Gabrielle Judge, the viral TikTok creator credited for coining the term, explained that she chose the word “lazy” satirically as seeking for a work-life balance is often misinterpreted as lazy in the rise and grind era that glorifies working excessively hard.

Listen to what Gabrielle Judge said:

@gabrielle_judge Here is my response to the gen z lazy girl job workplave trend covered in the news. I al ao excited becauae there are a lot of exciting projects going on that are more supportive to the recent trend to combat inflation and poor working conditions. #toxicworkplace #overworkedandunderpaid #careeradvice #quietquitting ♬ original sound – Gabrielle👸🏻

Inside the lazy girl jobs trend

The “Lazy girl jobs” trend might be new but it’s the same debate that has been surfacing since the end of the pandemic. Similar anti-career trends include “Quiet quitting”, “Bare minimum Monday”, and “Rage applying”. Workers, especially Gen Z, are increasingly challenging traditional workplace culture like hustle culture and prioritizing their personal lives and mental health over their jobs.
