Top 15 jobs for creative types

Did you know that 52% of the US population identifies as creative, while 75% of people believe they’re not living up to their creative potential? 

If you’re not living up to your creative potential just yet, and are looking to find a job that allows you to show off your creative flair then you’re in luck. We’ve found jobs that are perfect for creative types, from working in fashion to making people look amazing. 

Fashion model 

Average salary: $58,179 

A fashion model works for consumer brands, fashion designers, and photographers to advertise a wide array of products from sunglasses to coats. 

Within this, there are different types of models. Runway models tend to be tall (over 5ft 9 inches) and of slim build. Think Naomi Campbell or Kate Moss. Meanwhile, plus-size models are larger than an editorial or runway standard and tend to advertise plus-sized clothing designs. 

You’ll need to be comfortable in front of the camera and able to work long days on set or at fashion weeks. It’s a hard industry to crack, with open callouts being the best way to get your foot in the door. Although most models earn a fairly average salary, some superstar models can earn millions each year.

Photo editor 

Average salary: $63,000

Photo editors review and select photos that are going to be published in some way, either as an advert or in a magazine. They’ll have an eye for design and be able to spot great imagery and make edits to the photos themselves.

They’ll also make sure that images are created to meet the brand or company’s guidelines. 

You’ll need a background in photography, design, and editing and work would tend to be in advertising or magazines.

Graphic designer 

Average salary: $55,388

Graphic designers create everything from logos and marketing materials to posters, billboards, and packaging. They’ll use elements such as imagery, fonts, and colors to convey ideas to an audience. 

Graphic design is a skill in high demand, both in the full-time employment market and in the freelance marketplace 

To get your first role, you’ll typically need to have completed a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related fine arts subject, and have a portfolio you can share to showcase your designs.

Animator 

Average salary: $98,950

Can you wax lyrical about all the Pixar films or are you a stop-motion nut? Animators create some of our favorite movies and TV shows by using sequential images to produce something that moves. 

As well as the film industry, animators can also work in commercials and advertising, computer gaming, and music videos. 

You’ll normally hone your craft, majoring in animation at college, before interning and working your way up in studios.

Urban designer 

Average salary: $79,540

Ever visited a new city and felt like all the buildings, landscaping, and road layouts just work? Urban design is a type of architecture and town planning that involves creating better urban spaces for us to live and work in. 

You’ll need a master’s degree in urban design, strong computer skills, and the ability to communicate with lots of stakeholders, from town councilors to traffic planners. 

It’s a lot of work, but it could be a really rewarding role for anyone who wants to improve the urban environment.

Social media manager 

Average salary: $58,000

Do you keep up with TikTok trends like you keep up with the news? Social media managers control all things social media. They’ll work on the content and copy, and ensure that all channels are gaining new followers and increasing their impressions month on month. 

Although a lot of social media managers might have majored in marketing or advertising at college, many savvy social media managers are entering the field with no qualifications, especially those who’ve created a good presence of their own.

Deputy editor 

Average salary: $73,080

A deputy editor works for an online or offline publication as the second in command to the editor. In a magazine context, they would probably act as editors in certain sections of the magazine, as well as taking over in the editor’s absence. 

You’ll need to have excellent writing and editing skills and be able to maintain a tone of voice. You’ll probably have an academic background in writing, English language, or journalism and have worked your way up. Your next career jump would be to editor or editor-in-chief!

Creative director 

Average salary: $100,000+

Creative directors lead creative teams in advertising and marketing departments ensuring that there is a cohesive visual and thematic style across projects and campaigns. 

If you’re a fan of Mad Men, then Don Draper is the creative director at Sterling Cooper, inspired by creative director Draper Daniels who worked on the Marlboro Man campaign in the 1950s. 

This is a senior role, where you’ll usually need at least five years of senior experience in a related area such as design or advertising. You’ll often have a relevant bachelor’s degree too.

Makeup artist

Average salary: $42,231

The clue is definitely in the name, makeup artists are super creative, and the face is their canvas. You could work in a range of industries, from TV and film to fashion and editorial, to working directly for makeup brands testing and selling their products. 

You’ll usually start as a trainee or assistant and work your way up. With lots of different niches, it’s beneficial to know what kind of makeup you’d like to be working with. For example, say you wanted to work in special effects in the film industry, rather than learning your trade in a salon, try to land film and TV gigs doing make-up and hair for extras in crowd scenes. 

Game design 

Average salary: $71,390

Know your The Witcher from your Zelda? Games designers create interactive narration, develop game mechanics, generate storyboards, and create game ideas. 

It’s a collaborative role, usually working across large teams of designers, illustrators, and developers. You’ll need to love what you do, be super creative, and passionate about games, and have a bachelor’s and sometimes a master’s in a relevant subject such as computer game art or design.

Chief marketing officer 

Average salary: $130,000+

A chief marketing officer or CMO is a C-suite executive who focuses on marketing and communications. They play a vital role in a company’s growth and are the head of the organization’s marketing department. Normally this role is heavily strategy-based with the implementation falling to more junior members of staff. 

You must possess at least a bachelor’s degree in marketing, although a lot of companies will expect you to have an MBA. You won’t go straight from studies into a role like this either, at least 10 years in marketing and advertising is the industry norm.

Wedding planner 

Average salary: $49,655

Weddings are often an opportunity for the bride and groom to get creative so that their special day reflects their lives and their love story. Wedding planners bring all this creativity to life, from liaising with the venue, decorating tables, sorting stationary, and creating a fabulous menu. 

This is an opportunity for creatives to get stuck in with a wide range of things, bringing everything together into one vision. 

You’ll normally need a background in event management, either through qualifications or experience, and be happy to work a lot of evenings and weekends. 

Advertising copywriter 

Average salary: $72,000

Able to sell something in just a few words? Advertising copywriters have the tough job of creating some of the most memorable advertising slogans from “I’m lovin’ it” to “Just do it”. This isn’t a writing role where you’ll be expected to write loads of copy, in fact, the less copy the better. 

You’ll need to be a great storyteller and able to work closely with a designer so that visuals and words collaborate just as well as you do. 

You’ll usually have a degree in a related subject such as English, journalism, PR, or advertising but can work your way up with work experience and internships.

Hair stylist 

Average salary: $50,973

Love following the latest TikTok braid trends or was your Totally Hair Barbie your favorite? Hair stylists are responsible for washing, cutting, dying, and styling their clients’ hair. They’ll normally be able to give advice too, regarding what might look good, and what products to use. 

You’ll start with at least a high school diploma and then complete some state-approved courses to get your license.

Digital marketing manager 

Average salary: $85,000

Digital marketing managers look after all things digital. This can include, but is not limited to, web, SEO, email marketing, social media marketing, and paid-per-click (PPC) advertising. They’ll usually have a solid understanding of the breadth of digital marketing but may have moved up from a role in a specific area. 

You’d need to be tech-savvy and understand how data can inform a creative process as much as design and content. Normally, you’ll have a degree, but you can also work your way up through work experience and internships if you manage to get your foot in the door early on in your career.
