However, beneath the shiny facade lies a dangerous productivity trap of normalizing overworking and setting unattainable goals. Hustle culture had its moment back in the early 2000s <\/span>but<\/span>\u00a0it is losing its sheen now.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our data science team analyzes job ads between January 2020 and <\/span>March 2024, identifying the number of advertised vacancies\u00a0<\/span>and the proportion<\/span> of anti-hustle and hustle jobs,\u00a0<\/span>as well as<\/span>\u00a0top sectors for work-life balance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hustle culture explained<\/h2>\n

Hustle culture, also known as burnout culture nowadays, refers to a mentality\u00a0<\/span>that emphasizes<\/span>\u00a0working harder and longer is the only route to success. It glorifies the lifestyle of overworking and long hours, encouraging workers to constantly hustle for their professional goals, even at the expense of their health, well-being, and personal relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rise<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once upon a time, circa the 2000s, from Wall Street conglomerates to Silicon Valley startups, hustling was the song sung by many successful entrepreneurs, CEOs, and celebrities.\u00a0<\/span>Many Millennials who just entered the workforce at that time happily joined this productivity cult\u00a0<\/span>in the hope of moving<\/span> up the corporate ladder swiftly and <\/span>reaching<\/span>\u00a0all their professional goals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fall<\/strong><\/p>\n

In recent years, perhaps in the aftermath of the pandemic,\u00a0<\/span>there has been<\/span>\u00a0a heightened awareness of health and well-being\u00a0<\/span>among workers<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The grind mentality and the workaholic persona no longer appeal to the modern workforce, and the hustle culture is de facto considered toxic. Relentless work and devoting your life to work solely can have\u00a0<\/span>serious repercussions on<\/span>\u00a0physical health, mental health, and personal life, such as triggering nervous breakdowns, and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>strained relationships with family and friends, to name a few \u2013 not to mention hustling does not guarantee \u201csuccess\u201d at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gen Zs are canceling hustle culture, replacing it with anti-hustle movements like \u201cQuiet Quitting<\/span>\u201d,<\/span>\u00a0\u201cLazy Girl Job<\/span>\u201d,<\/span>\u00a0and \u201cBare Minimum Monday<\/span>\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0Meanwhile, Millennials who used to idolize hustle culture in their 20s realize the rise-and-grind culture\u00a0<\/span>is built<\/span>\u00a0on a bed of lies and decide to detach themselves from putting work as their main priority\u00a0<\/span>in life<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anti-hustle jobs on the rise<\/h2>\n

Good news \u2013 hustle culture is on its way out. Our Adzuna data has shown that anti-hustle jobs are steadily rising. <\/span><\/p>\n

Anti-hustle jobs are defined as positions that emphasize work-life balance and overall well-being over relentless productivity and long working hours. Our data team looked for keywords among job ads, such as \u201cwork-life balance\u201d, \u201cat your own pace\u201d, \u201cstructured office hours\u201d, \u201cno overtime\u201d, and \u201cduvet days\u201d. Meanwhile, hustle jobs are characterized by their demanding nature and emphasis on constant productivity. We looked for red flags like \u201ccan-do attitude\u201d, \u201cwork hard, play hard\u201d, \u201cwe are family\u201d, \u201coccasional overtime\u201d, and “meetings across multiple time zones\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In March 2024, there were 648,548 anti-hustle jobs, accounting for 8.7% of all jobs in the US.\u00a0<\/span>This<\/span>\u00a0is the highest level we\u2019ve seen since coming out of the pandemic. Compared to pre-pandemic times, there has been a +356% increase in\u00a0<\/span>the number of<\/span>\u00a0advertised jobs advocating for work-life balance, up from 142,168 jobs in Jan 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for hustle jobs, while there is still a high proportion of hustle jobs, our data shows signs of the decline since coming out of the pandemic, down almost -5% from 1,418,777 advertised jobs in March 2022 to 1,349,318 jobs in March 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
