We\u2019re being hit with rising energy bills as well as a groceries bill that is going up and up.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies are trying to counter these rising costs for their workers with increased wages.\u00a0 Employers across the US plan to offer an average raise of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/salary-pay-raise-workers-2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2023. However, despite inflation steadying and decreasing in recent months, employers will still see a decrease in the value of their pay packet. We look into this more, below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Should I be asking for a pay rise?<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2677 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/pexels-kuncheek-210990-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t seen a salary increase in recent months, you\u2019ll be worse off than you were a few months ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High inflation has left US workers\u2019 buying power dipping. In real terms, average hourly wages have fallen by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/resourcesandtools\/hr-topics\/compensation\/pages\/august-2022-cpi-and-real-earnings-reports.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.8%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re feeling more stretched than before, know that you\u2019re not alone. 28% of US workers said they\u2019re struggling financially, and 38% indicated that their friends and family were, according to insights from the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For employers, wages are considered \u201csticky\u201d meaning that they tend not to go down. Therefore companies are slow to raise wages while they determine the long-term implications of inflation and how to balance wages and inflation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to get inflation under control, we as consumers must buy less, decreasing the competition to buy, and thus steady the increase in pricing. Therefore, if we all got inflation-busting pay packets, prices could continue to rise at high rates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, there\u2019s no right answer, but workers should absolutely be looking for an increase, even if it does simply match the national average wage increase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees are being encouraged to make requests for pay rises that focus on individual value, rather than just due to increased living costs, as not all employers can afford to meet inflation for every employee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What do pay rises look like across sectors?<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2676 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4475523-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the US there is a huge disparity in wages in the public sector vs the private sector, with the public sector struggling to keep up. Between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/articles\/2022\/02\/07\/government-wage-growth-lags-private-sector-by-largest-margin-on-record\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Q4 2019 and Q4 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both the public and private sectors saw a reduction in wages when adjusted to inflation. Across all types of work, public sector employees saw a 3.7% decrease in the value of their wages, while private sector employees only saw a 0.5% hit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In service occupations, the difference is even more dramatic. Public sector employees saw a 1.8% loss versus private sector employees seeing an increase of 3.4% &#8211; the only increase recorded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public sector employees are however due their biggest pay increase if Biden\u2019s latest plan goes through congress. In 2023, they\u2019ll see a 4.6% pay rise, compared to 2.7% in 2022. However, this is still below inflation and below the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/federalnewsnetwork.com\/pay\/2022\/08\/biden-officially-plans-4-6-average-pay-raise-for-federal-employees-in-2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5.1% <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">federal employees are asking for to begin making up the 22.47% pay gap between federal employees and their private sector peers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In government, senators have not seen a pay increase (from their annual salary of $174,000) since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fact-checking-847508849139\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2008\/9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Will living costs come down?<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2675 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/pexels-maitree-rimthong-1602726-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately not. This is why knowing your worth when it comes to pay is vitally important.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With some signs suggesting the worst is behind us, experts suggest it will likely be at least a couple of years before costs of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/nextadvisor\/investing\/expert-say-how-long-will-take-inflation-to-come-down\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goods decrease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fed\u2019s response to inflation has been to raise interest rates, encouraging us to save rather than spend so that we buy fewer goods. With us collectively buying less, it is hoped that prices will stop rising so fast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>How much should my job pay me?<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2678 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4386373-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s where salary transparency is key. If your organization publishes an annual salary report, focussing on for example the gender pay gap, you should be able to work out where you sit within your organization\u2019s pay scale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, <a href=\"https:\/\/nwlc.org\/resource\/pay-range-transparency-laws-benefit\/\">over a quarter of the US labor force<\/a> lives in an area with salary transparency laws. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These laws tend to protect employees who would like to freely discuss pay without fear of retaliation from their employer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some states go further around pay transparency at the point of applying for a job, or when you\u2019re working. It\u2019s absolutely worth knowing what pay transparency looks like in your state so you can use this to your advantage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside of your employer, spend time investigating your market rate. Look at what competitors are offering for your role, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.com\/value-my-resume\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">value your resume<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">search for jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you\u2019re qualified for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your job has dramatically changed, your responsibilities have increased and you\u2019ve been promoted in all but name, try to benchmark what you should be paid based on your roles and responsibilities rather than your job title.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>How many people successfully get a pay rise when they ask for one?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not a lot of workers get a raise when they ask for one. It\u2019s around 1 in 6.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the US, women ask for a raise just as often as men, but they\u2019re less successful. For women who ask for a raise, only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/06\/research-women-ask-for-raises-as-often-as-men-but-are-less-likely-to-get-them\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> receive one, whereas, for men, they\u2019re successful 20% of the time. This exacerbates the 18% pay gap between male and female workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This situation only worsens for black and ethnic minority workers. Hispanic women experience the most significant pay gap of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/women-of-color-and-the-wage-gap\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">43%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asking for a raise isn\u2019t the only way to get one. Research has shown that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/09\/more-pay-raises-are-on-the-way-for-many-workers-this-year.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of firms plan to raise wages again in the coming months while 8% are still thinking about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>When is the right time to ask for a salary adjustment?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve passed your probationary period, salary discussions can always be on the table.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some employers will do regular salary reviews either every year or every six months. Although these are often an opportunity for your employer to put a number on the table, make sure you have a number in mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside of these formal discussion points, keep an eye out for other opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Your role has changed and you\u2019ve taken on more responsibility. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps there is an additional person reporting to you or you\u2019re leading a strategic project? This could be an opportunity to not only discuss a salary increase but also a potential promotion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You\u2019d like a promotion due to performing above and beyond for a significant period. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your annual reviews are coming up as exceptional time and time again and you\u2019re always getting great feedback from colleagues this could be a time to ask for a promotion and a pay increase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You\u2019re being paid below your colleagues for the same job. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can be a really difficult one to navigate. Frame it as a discussion around where your salary sits within a market rate, how well you\u2019re doing, and why you deserve more money.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You\u2019ve been offered a new job. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Switching jobs can have a dramatic effect on your pay packet. On average, it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/08\/02\/typical-job-switcher-got-a-pay-raise-of-nearly-10percent-study-finds.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9.7%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in real wages, accounting for inflation, but if you\u2019re willing to switch industries or roles it could be even more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With employers desperate to retain top talent, counter offers are not unusual. Yep, quitting your job can be a great way to secure a pay rise &#8211; either with your employer or a new one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Financially the books aren\u2019t balancing.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is something to be really mindful of. With basic costs increasing it can be hard to budget. Spend some time going through all of your expenses, and keep a track of how these are increasing month on month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your financial well-being is important, so make sure you discuss this with your employer. If a pay rise is off the table, ask about their financial well-being policy. According to Bank of America, at least half of US-based companies have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.benify.com\/how-to-increase-financial-wellness-in-your-workplace#:~:text=According%20to%20Bank%20of%20America's,to%20just%2024%25%20in%202015.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">financial well-being policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in place. And it\u2019s hardly a surprise. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbesbusinesscouncil\/2022\/07\/06\/when-companies-invest-in-employees-financial-fitness-everyone-benefits\/?sh=2f2911605f66\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">65%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of workers report that their debt is a problem, and nearly half feel that worrying about finances distracts them at work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart employers should and are caring about multiple aspects of their employees&#8217; lives, and finance is a key factor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Ready to ask for a pay rise?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it is best to frame a pay rise request around your contributions to your workplace and increased responsibilities, asking for a raise should in real terms help you to cover your increased living costs.
