Position Summary:
Paraeducators assist all students, including those with special needs, in accessing the same academic and social-emotional programs within REACH’s full inclusion environment where “all means all” regardless of ability level, or ethnic, linguistic, and/or economic background. Under the direction of either classroom teachers or special education teachers, paraeducators provide support including but not limited to: assisting teachers with general daily classroom activities, providing accommodations and modification to students with special needs, and caring for all students by supporting their physical and emotional health and safety, affirming their abilities, and striving to promote dignity in all relationships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Directed by classroom and/or special education teachers, as well as administrators if necessary, the Paraeducator:
  • Provides instructional support to students in small groups and/or on an individual basis.
  • Assists classroom and special education teachers with supervision of students within the classroom,
  • including implementing individual student behavioral plans.
  • Supervises students on the playground and in the cafeteria.
  • Assists teachers with the preparation of classroom materials including copying, filing, and computer work.
  • Assists with the collection of academic and behavioral data.
  • Tends to the personal needs of students which may include lifting, holding, diapering, feeding, and/or
    responding to minor illnesses and injuries if appropriate training has been received.
  • Corresponds and/or meets with parents about specific student issues or to provide specific student information when directed by the teacher(s).
  • Collaborates with other team members to promote shared vision and ownership, including opportunities for observation, peer feedback, team teaching, and communication with other team members.
  • Engages in professional development opportunities throughout the school year that are either offered by the school or are external trainings approved by the Principal.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Required
  • Associate's degree or two years of college
  • Possess a certificate of completion of Basic First Aid training or be prepared to obtain certification, at
  • Employer expense, within six months of employment
  • Corresponds and/or meets with parents about specific student issues or to provide specific student information when directed by the teacher(s)

Highly Desirable
  • Experience working with persons with special needs
  • Previous school experience
  • Experience using general office equipment
  • CPR Certification

  • Ability to comply with federal and state confidentiality regulations regarding student information and to be discrete about workplace matters.
  • Willingness to provide diapering and feeding via feeding tube if required for a student(s) and willingness to use physical restraint if necessary to provide safety for student and others.

  • Ability to walk, sit, stand, bend, reach, stoop, kneel, and/or crouch for extended periods of time on a daily basis.
  • Full use of both hands (including each individual finger) and both arms.
  • Ability to lift 5 (five) to 10 (ten) pounds on a frequent basis, and lift up to 50 (fifty) pounds, with support, on an occasional basis.
