Department 498 engineers will work in a Design/Build Team environment and be responsible for completion of design studies and analysis, preliminary and detail component design, system engineering, material selection and manufacturing reviews. Engineers will provide support for the development, installation and test of OHIO Class replacement submarine systems in the area of weapons handling, weapons launch, retractable masts, hydraulic components/cylinders, steering & diving systems, ship hatches and doors, towed systems and other special studies.

Responsibilities include performing detail mechanical analysis, machine design development, review of system and component specifications, technical reviews of vendor supplied equipment, coordination of design services and vendors, and evaluation of design concepts and cost reduction ideas. Engineers will interface with engineers from all disciplines, designers, shipbuilders, trades, vendors, Navy Labs and NAVSEA customer personnel. Experience with reading 2D drawings as well as 3D CAD design systems and FEA using Abaqus a plus. Experience in designing mechanical systems/components for seawater exposure/immersion a plus.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering
  • 2-3 years of related engineering experience


  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering
  • Experience with Engineering Analysis using Finite Element Analysis, especially ABAQUS
  • Knowledge of Subsafe requirements and Subsafe Design Reviews (SSDRs)
  • Experience performing mechanical shock analysis on submarine components and systems
  • Experience developing designs of submarine mechanical components and systems
  • Reading and interpreting electronic design disclosures (drawings)
  • Experience designing mechanical systems/components for seawater exposure/immersion
  • Experience using Mathcad to perform calculations
  • Experience using Teamcenter

  • Candidate must possess strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, support off hours and weekend routine and trouble resolution events.
  • Candidate must be highly motivated, perform independently, as well as interact with other groups and organizations in an engineering environment.
