Reporting to the VP Safety and Health, the Senior Director Retail Safety and Health is responsible for providing leadership and direction in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of Nutrien Safety and Health.

The role is responsible for establishing the vision, strategy and execution of our Retail Safety and Health programs and management systems to identify and minimize Safety and Health risks and liabilities ensuring compliance with all applicable national and international laws and regulations.

What you will do:

  • Vision and Strategy Development – Develop a clear vision and strategy for safety and health in the North America Nutrien Ag Solutions business unit
  • Implement actions effectively and efficiently in conjunction with Retail Leaders Team, Central SH&E, Retail Branch SH&E Resources and Retail Site Operations
  • Facilitate development and utilization of strategic and operational plans to address and improve the control (elimination) of S&H hazards and associated risks
  • Execution - Develop and direct annual organizational goals, objectives, policies and operational procedures
  • Monitor and evaluate effectiveness, implementing changes required for continual improvement
  • Provide hands-on technical SH&E expertise related to culture, internal standard, compliance and industry best practices
  • Use technical, human factors and other theoretical knowledge, to research, review and interpret hazard information identifying causation, consequences, controls, including potential failure in controls
  • Support identification and implementation of critical controls for effective SH&E risk management and risk elimination
  • Implement, monitor and evaluate processes and procedures investigating, analyzing and reporting SH&E trends and nonconformities
Regulatory - Provide guidance on current and new regulatory expectations
  • Represent Nutrien with outside entities such as regulatory agencies and consultants
  • Anticipate potential legislative change, minimizing the impact of new or changing regulations by recommending potential solutions to Central SH&E and Retail Management
  • Understand how to access, use, evaluate, develop and communicate SH&E evidence
Commitment – Develop, lead and support actions which contribute to all Nutrien Operations “Home safe everyday”Relationships - Develop and foster strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop relationships with Retail Leadership Team, SH&E Professionals and Practitioners influencing SH&E strategy, goals and objectives acting as a change agent for continual improvement
  • Advise the RLT on appropriate management practices to achieve an organizational culture focused on SH&E across our footprint in North America
  • Provide Retail leadership advice based on conceptual and technical knowledge of design, operations and management, mediated by experience, analysis of evidence and critical thought
  • Make recommendations addressing identified issues, improving SH&E management as well as risk minimization
  • Collect, evaluate and communicate information from diverse internal and external sources as part of evidence-based practice
Budgeting and Finance – lead efforts in Retail Safety and Health for monthly and annual budgets, ensure we meet or exceed agreed budget goals, actively drive cost control across the teamLeadership will play a key role in this position by
  • Provide leadership in S & H and act as an exemplar of S & H practice and behavior to peers, coworkers and the public
  • Steward the strategic vision of the team’s leaders and department with effectively interacting with senior leaders across the Ag Solutions business
  • Demonstrating leadership skills through coaching and developing the leaders within the team to higher levels
  • Influence management participating in problem solving and organizational review as subject matter experts, advisor or consultants
  • Operate with a level of autonomy to conceptualize, plan, implement and evaluate S & H projects and risk control and management processes
  • Make high-level independent judgments actively collaborating with Central S & H, Retail Management and other business units
  • Steward the development of Key Performance Indicators (“KPIs”) and Performance Measures (“PMs”) for S & H
  • Monitor progress towards achievement of KPIs/PMs
  • Actively engage in performance management including employee development
  • Recognize the maturity of the organization’s culture working with managers to influence positive evolution increasing organizational S & H culture
Develop and foster strong relationships with internal customers as well as regulators at all levels within government agencies to ensure the continued effectiveness of Safety and Health programsCapital – review, manage, justify capital projects to plan, lead review of projects with rigor to make sure spend delivers at, or better than plan. Ensure seamless collaboration between Engineering team and the business unitsCultural and Organizational Development – Coach and development of the organization in line with the behaviors of the Retail and Nutrien culture
  • Significantly improve employee engagement and empowerment
  • Remove silos in and between businesses and groups, develop, manage and coach your team on the Nutrien culture
  • Work with Human Resources to develop strategies to ensure proper succession plans and professional development are in place thus creating health for the organization as a whole
  • Promote a S & H culture of commitment and performance
  • Effectively utilize KPIs, performance reviews, financial statements and operational reports to track performance
  • Establish effective action planning for the fostering continuous improvement
Liaise with General Counsel as well as the leaders of the business units to proactively support their requests and maintain Legal records as needed to meet Nutrien obligations to regulators, agencies and vested parties

What you will bring:

  • 15+ years professional experience; minimum 10 years relevant experience at a senior leadership level
  • Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, ordinances, and regulations
  • Ability to manage complex projects that include both internal and external stakeholders, customers and regulators in a concise, efficient manner
  • Proven ability to break down complex technical issues, into actionable solutions, that customers can implement
  • Strong history of dedication and follow-through to meeting the expectations and requirements of all customers; acts with customers in mind; establishes and maintains effective relationships with customers and gains their trust and respect
  • Self-motivated and highly organized, thrives in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent executive leadership skills, exceptional communication, written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Make strategic well educated decisions based upon a mixture of data analysis, experience and judgment. Based on a proven track record, is sought out by others for advice and solutions

  • Strong experience working with both Legal Counsel and International regulators as well as US Federal, State, County and City regulators
