This position requires thorough knowledge of modern clinical laboratory practice, computer science skills relating to data base management, clinical information systems and laboratory computer systems, and strong verbal and written communication skills. This position requires an individual who seeks creative solutions and possesses initiative and decisiveness. The Clinical Laboratory Informaticist working with the IT Applications team helps maintain the Laboratory Information system, software applications and databases of lab systems across the care continuum. This role has the thorough understanding of all application functionality, reporting capabilities, interfacing and integration of each clinical application and clinical laboratory instrumentation assigned.


  • Identifies opportunities to leverage technology to improve clinical workflow. Leads the development of policies and procedures and provides guidance on EMR best practices to various Process Improvement committees in UMC for the optimal usage of Clinical Lab Information Systems.
  • Provides expert guidance to EHR teams on system optimization, change management, standardized processes and workflows for a successful post implementation operation. This role requires an ability to build and maintain relationships with client and project
  • Works In collaboration with the IT Applications team, to understand requirements for orders and physician order sets (PowerPlans) , and participates in governance and change processes, including oversight of laboratory informatics.
  • Acts as a patient safety advocate by analyzing laboratory related clinical systems for vulnerabilities to error and implementing error prevention strategies
  • Supports departmental educational functions in training staff on clinical technology processes and requires a detailed knowledge of the electronic health record and the ability to analyze processes/systems as they impact the organizations’ strategic initiatives and patient experience.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of long-term strategic applications planning for the Lab Information Systems to achieve strategic outcomes for the implementation.
  • Adheres to all security standards as set forth by the organization and national guidelines.
  • Works closely with clinical laboratory leadership, department of pathology medical directors, and other stakeholders to design, implement and support the goals and objectives of the organization set by the leadership.
  • Uses clinical background and EHR experience to benefit the build, support and optimization of the EHR application assigned
  • Ensures consistent use of clinical and revenue cycle information technology and the adoption of Lab team workflow changes enabled by Cerner.
  • Acts as a liaison between technical staff and business subject matter experts in creating and refining business requirements
  • Proactively communicates and collaborates with internal and external customers to analyze information needs and functional requirements and delivery
  • Performs testing and training on system changes, upgrades and enhanced functionality
  • Works closely with applications analysts, departments and technical teams to create and maintain appropriate application and workflow documentation
  • Provide basic support for hardware including label printers, electronic collection hardware (Care Mobiles and POW carts), desktop PCs, automated monitors (collection and TAT monitors, DTVs), bar code scanners, document scanners
  • Coordinate with ULH IT department for support of networking systems
  • Coordinate with IT Applications analyst for basic maintenance tasks for LIS (interpretive comments, reference ranges, new organisms or antibiotics in micro database, word processing templates, charge codes and pricing).
  • Coordinate with IT Applications analyst to request new or modified tests that will require change control approval and synchronization with other modules (HIM, Clinical Documentation, Power Plan analysis, etc.).
  • Lead the lab report writing teams to generate statistical, quality assurance, quality control, and process improvement, and research related reports.
  • Attends management meetings and other meetings on as need basis.
  • Communicates to staff consistently through individual rounding, staff meetings, and hospital email.
  • Ensures that accreditation standards are met for all sections and adheres to all regulatory, compliance and medical necessity guidelines.
  • Supports Laboratory and Hospital Management and uses the concept of managing up leaders and staff. Is prepared and accessible for Senior Rounding in Department.
  • Provides training and education to lab employees, students, residents, fellows and other employees.
  • Writes and/or edits Policies and Procedures in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. Demonstrates comprehension of all procedures within the department as defined in the Procedure Manuals; ensures staff comprehension. Reviews Manuals annually, revises procedures as necessary.
  • Assists with direct observation to ensure staff perform processes correctly and in the standardized work manner.
  • Ensures computer equipment (clinical printers, workstations, etc.) is properly maintained with appropriate documentation, and prepares work orders to repair broken equipment.
  • Interfaces with other departments in a collaborative, professional manner and works closely with Coordinators.
  • Promotes customer service excellence by responding quickly to inquiries/requests by researching and resolving internal and external questions.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.

Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

  • MS, BS or BA in Chemistry or Biological Science or Medical Technology required; qualified as technologist/technician under CLIA rules preferred.

Experience (required and preferred):

  • 3+ years of informatics experience with laboratory EMR systems required.
  • 3+ years of informatics experience with Cerner laboratory EMR modules, including PowerChart, is preferred.
  • Experience supporting laboratory billing and formulary management in an academic setting preferred.
  • Cerner implementation and/or support experience preferred.
