Job Summary

Houston Methodist (HM) is looking for passionate data analyst to join the Center for Cardiovascular Computational Health (C3H) to lead and develop informatics initiatives that transform healthcare via data science and informatics. The mission of C3H at Houston Methodist is to establish nation’s premier academic program leading data-driven advances in cardiovascular precision medicine,¿accelerate discovery,¿and improve patient and population health by harnessing power of innovative computation paradigms, big data, and artificial machine intelligence with goals for supporting research initiatives of established clinical divisions at HM Debakey and Vascular Center and rapid knowledge generation for clinical cardiology enterprise

The responsibility of the senior data analyst is to work concurrently with the center leadership and data science in developing, maintaining as well leading EMR as well as population level data analytics initiatives The senior data analyst should leverage the information curated from within HM enterprise data warehouses and the Epic® electronic medical record for cardiovascular registries, curating national datasets identified by team leadership. Under the guidance and direction of the Director of Center for Cardiovascular Computational Health (C3H) the senior data scientist will work closely with identified stakeholders to implement projects of clinical, research, business and societal benefit. Advanced data management skills (cleaning, performing validity checks, transformation, coding / re-categorization, working with dates / times and merging data across disparate sources including EMR and administrative data), and psychometrics is also required. There will be a special emphasis on outcomes research in clinical domains of cardiovascular medicine for this position. Individuals with prior experience in related clinical fields are encouraged to apply. The projects for this role will include, but are not limited to: maintaining and curator datasets, research study protocol design and supporting analysis, predictive analytics, crafting innovative decision support methodology, advanced analytics, outcomes measures, cost reduction, quality improvement, population health management, statistical and advanced modeling techniques applied to different types of health and meta data, and coordinate with clinicians and scientists to support research activities. The position promotes and supports system and department specific ICARE values.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

PEOPLE - 20%

  1. Communicates results of queries in database systems and upgrades regarding electronic protocol management system to coworkers, staff and management. (EF)
  2. Completes and works directly with physicians, clinical staff and management on customized data queries and other requests for operational and research needs. (EF)
  3. Fosters teamwork approach in all interactions with peers and team members. Anticipates needs of other team members; proactively offering assistance. Provides contributions towards improvement of department scores for turnover/retention/employee engagement. (EF)

SERVICE - 30%

  1. Provides troubleshooting logic in relation to technical support. (EF)
  2. Provides and/or supervises gathering, entering and auditing of data in database. (EF)
  3. Assists with design and implementation of processes to ensure accurate data collection and input. (EF)
  4. Performs statistical analysis interpretation by preparing reports (monthly, quarterly and/or as needed) on productivity, quality activities, trends and other clinical or business metrics relevant to the department. (EF)

QUALITY/SAFETY - 15%

  1. Conducts routine data processing and implementation of quality control methods. (EF)
  2. Develops standard operating procedures. Ensures compliance with all HIPAA/confidentiality regulations. (EF)
  3. In conjunction with management, participates in performance improvement program for department. (EF)

FINANCE - 20%

  1. Conducts, as appropriate, statistical power and sample size determination, inferential hypothesis testing, data mining and knowledge discovery in databases. (EF)
  2. Responsible for all aspects of clinical data analyses for multiple studies. (EF)
  3. Programs and develops algorithms for numerical methods and develops workflow and data pipelines as needed for project(s). (EF)

GROWTH/INNOVATION - 15%

  1. Collaborates with Technology regarding software system proposals, purchases, installations, upgrades, enhancements and modifications. (EF)
  2. Identifies and assumes responsibility of own learning needs, consults with team experts and seeks continuing education opportunities to meet those needs. Completes and updates the individual development plan (IDP) on an on-going basis. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management. (EF)

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, math, physics or related field

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Three years in data analysis, preferably in a healthcare/research setting

  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Strong background in computer programming
  • Proficiency in Excel, Access and shell scripting strongly and ability to utilize multiple software applications
  • Familiarity with common imaging tools and database experience and/or experience with neuroinformatic software beneficial
  • Previous database project management experience preferred
  • Experience in relational database design
  • Knowledge of medical practices and terminology strongly preferred
  • Excellent analytical / statistical skills
  • Experience with report writers preferred
  • Excellent communications skills and ability to interact well with medical staff
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently
