The United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) is one of 11 Unified Combatant Commands (CCMDs) in the United States (U.S.) Department of Defense (DoD). USSOUTHCOM’s Area of Responsibility (AOR) includes Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. USSOUTHCOM is responsible for providing contingency planning, operations, and security cooperation for the AOR and its territorial waters and Force Protection (FP) of U.S. military resources at these locations. USSOUTHCOM is also responsible for ensuring the defense of the Panama Canal and the canal area. USSOUTHCOM has a requirement for rapid reaction to special mission projects across multiple disciplines. These projects are designed to mitigate asymmetric threats to tactical elements deployed in various AORs and build capacity among partner nations in furtherance of these mitigation efforts. These projects develop, integrate, and provide the operation of mission systems used for information collection that detect, identify, assess, exploit, or neutralize threats to the U.S. and its interests. Command, Control, Communications, Computer, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) is often referred to as the collective whole, but the capabilities are distinct and each fulfills a different purpose in support of the overall mission.
