The HIM Coding Integrity Educator conducts and develops coder education/training materials and coordinates training and development of acute care coding staff. Provides technical staff training in the usage of HIM coding system applications and serves as an end-user resource. Develops and administers new hire coding skill assessments as a part of department-specific orientation and on-the-job training. Performs internal quality assessment reviews on coders to ensure compliance with national coding guidelines and the HIM coding policies for complete, accurate and consistent coding which result in appropriate reimbursement and data integrity. Help coordinate and direct the day-to-day coding educational activities as well as facilitate coding education classes/presentations to staff, as required/when needed. Communicates outcomes to the coding team and leadership to improve the accuracy, integrity and quality of patient data, to ensure minimal variation in coding practices and to improve the quality of physician documentation within the body of the medical record to support code assignments. Perform root cause analysis of coding quality issues, performing account reviews, and preparing training documents to assist with coding quality action plans. Actively participates in department and hospital performance initiatives when needed to ensure UofL success.

  • Participates on special coding reviews or projects.
  • Research coding opportunities and escalate as needed.
  • Develop coding compliance curriculum and training handbook.
  • Meets all educational requirements as stated in HIM Coding policies.
  • Coaches and mentors coding staff as they develop and grow their coding skills.
  • Assists in ensuring coding staff adherence with coding guidelines and policy.
  • Provides skilled coding support through regularly scheduled coding meetings as the need arises.
  • Demonstrates and applies expert level knowledge of medical coding practices and concepts.
  • Maintains or exceeds daily productivity standards and meets or exceeds 95% accuracy rate.
  • Assists in the review, improvement of processes, education, troubleshooting and recommend prioritization of issues.
  • Monitors coding QA results to inform Coding Leadership in root cause analysis and educational opportunities.
  • Reviews all official data quality standards, coding guidelines, Company policies and procedures, and clinical/medical resources to assure coding knowledge and skills remain current.
  • Performs an annual education needs assessment as input to the strategic coding education program and provides this assessment to the Coding Leadership team.
  • Communicates Coding topics and/or question trends to Coding Leadership for global education
  • Practices and demonstrates adherence to UofL Health Code of Conduct and ethics philosophy and the HIM Department’s Mission and Vision.
  • Maintain knowledge of, CMS, DRG, CPT, HCPCS and ICD10 Classifications changes that applies to inpatient and outpatient coding.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Undergraduate (associates or bachelors) degree in HIM required.
  • 5+ years acute care inpatient/outpatient coding experience required.
  • RHIA or RHIT and CCS, CPC-H, CIC, CPC certified coding credential required.
  • Prior experience with 3M coding systems and Cerner EMR preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years coding auditing/education experience strongly preferred.


  • Coding Technical/Professional Knowledge and Skills - extensive regulatory coding, (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10- PCS, CPT-4, Modifiers, MS-DRGs, POA assignment and where applicable APR-DRGs and APCs) and associated reimbursement knowledge.
