Under the general direction of the Library Director, the Electronic Resources and Technical Services Librarian activates, troubleshoots, and maintains access to the library’s electronic resources including databases, aggregate electronic resources, and the Library’s website. The Electronic Resources and Technical Services Librarian manages the library’s integrated library system’s (Sierra) cataloging, circulation, patron, and item records and reports modules. This position manages the Library’s discovery tools including authentication software (OpenAthens), the discovery layer (SUMMON), and link-out applications, as well as maintaining e-resource access and management services (Serial Solutions). The Electronic Resources and Technical Services Librarian provides original cataloging and classification of library materials in all formats.

Working with other TUN librarians, the Electronic Services and Technical Services Librarian provides library assistance, instruction, and support to students, faculty, and staff in the College of Health and Human Services (Nursing, OT, PT, PA, Education) and the College of Osteopathic Medicine (Osteopathic Medicine, MHS) including library instruction, reference services, and research services.

This position also participates in the management of document delivery and interlibrary loan services. This position assists with the recruitment, training, and supervision of library

student workers.

The Electronic Resources and Technical Services Librarian is responsible for managing and maintaining access to all library electronic resources, cataloging and classifying materials in all formats, and providing reference and instruction services to the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) and the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS). Reporting to the Library Director, this is a faculty position with a rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.


1. Maintains consistent and reliable operation, delivery of, and access to the library’s electronic resources.

1.1. Activates, troubleshoots, and maintains access to the library’s electronic resources including databases and aggregate electronic resources.

1.2. Implements new e-resources and troubleshoots problems related to e-resources.

1.3. Manages the library’s integrated library system’s (Sierra) cataloging, circulation, patron, and item records and reports modules.

1.4. Manages the Library’s discovery tools including authentication software (OpenAthens), the discovery layer (SUMMON), and link-out applications.

1.5. Maintains accuracy and currency of serial holdings (Serial Solutions).

1.6. Obtains and compiles usage statistics for electronic resources and provides analysis pertaining to their usage and cost per use.

1.7. Develops and maintains content for the library website.

1.8. Stays informed about web technology, mobile services, and social media, particularly as it pertains to libraries and library services.

2. Catalogs and classifies monographic and electronic resource materials.

2.1. Catalogs and classifies materials using cataloging rules and schedules.

2.2. Accessions and deaccessions library materials.

2.3. Completes original and copy cataloging of materials in all formats using proper fixed fields, tags, indicators, and delimiters, and exporting records to the library’s integrated system.

2.4. Completes authority control and solves problems in the authority subsystems of the library system.

2.5. Selects and modifies records, call numbers, and subject headings according to cataloging rules and local practices.

3. Provides reference services.

3.1. Provides in-depth reference services in support of CHHS and COM to faculty, staff, students, residents, and preceptors.

3.2. Provides regularly scheduled reference services on the virtual chat service platform (Libraryh3lp).

3.3. Responds to reference queries submitted via email, phone, or chat in a timely manner, with in-person reference services expected to resume in July 2021.

4. Provides library research instruction.

4.1. Provides library orientation and training to new students, faculty, staff, residents, and preceptors.

4.2. Provides expert literature search services in support of education, research projects, systematic reviews, and research data management as well as mediated literature searches with faculty.

4.3. Provides instruction on effective searching and evaluation of results for biomedical databases, evidence-based practice resources, and point-of-care tools. Provides instruction on such topics as evidence-based medicine, online proprietary database searching, and research techniques.

4.4. Designs and delivers interactive information literacy instruction modules in the Learning Management System (Canvas) and develops online information literacy tutorials in support of research and evidence-based practice.

4.5. Develops and assesses student learning outcomes for information literacy sessions.

4.6. Provides formal and informal education courses, seminars, webinars, and workshops in support of research development across the university.

4.7. Develops and maintains Libguide research guides.

5. Assists with Library work study students.

5.1. Assists in the hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of the Library work study students.

5.2. Monitors the timesheets and the work schedules of the Library work study students for accuracy and completeness and notifies the Library Director of any issues.

6. Assists with the processing of interlibrary loan (ILL) requests.

6.1. Assists with tracking of borrowing and lending requests.

6.2. Processes interlibrary loan/document delivery using OCLC, DOCLINE, and Clio.

6.3. Compiles ILL statistics.

7. Manages the Library’s course reserve materials.

7.1. Assists with processing and scanning of materials for course reserves.

8. Creates course reserves in the ILS (Sierra) course reserve module.

9. Serves on faculty and university-wide committees.

10. Participates in faculty functions where faculty attendance is expected, such as White Coat Ceremony, Commencement, and new student orientation.

11. Other duties as required.

Required Education:

MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program.

Required Experience:

Minimum of three years of academic library experience.

  • Experience with digital resources, link resolvers and authentication methods.

  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Work experience and/or educational background related to medicine and/or the health sciences (preferred).

  • Excellent computer skills (e.g. APIs, XHTML, XML, SQL).
