Title: Director for the Hartwick College Center for Craft Food & Beverage

Description: The Hartwick College Center for Craft Food & Beverage was launched in 2016 to support growth and innovation in the craft brewing value chain through technical support, research, & education. The Center provides convenient, affordable and reliable quality testing for beer and brewing raw materials including grain, malt & hops in its specially equipped laboratory. The Center serves a large and diverse base of clients including breweries, distilleries, malthouses, farms and other food & beverage producers.

The Director is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the laboratory, including supervision of technical staff and students to deliver accurate & timely analysis of submitted samples. The Director also collaborates with faculty members and students to conduct research in malting & brewing science, raw materials and quality measurement. Work with faculty, College administration, external vendors, and other entities in developing and implementing workshops, courses, and professional development opportunities.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated and entrepreneurial with a strong technical background and a sincere desire to help small businesses and contribute to the economic development of the region.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the operations of the testing laboratory, including coordinating the work of technical staff and students to ensure accurate & timely analysis of submitted client samples
  • Prepare samples and conduct analytical testing using standard operating procedures and approved methods
  • Review all data and evaluate test results for accuracy & validity
  • Prepare and send result reports to clients on a timely basis
  • Respond to inquiries from clients regarding testing needs, pricing, shipping & payment instructions, turnaround times, and interpretation of results
  • Monitor revenue and expenses and follow all College financial procedures associated with purchasing, contracts, and travel
  • Develop, implement, and monitor quality control activities to ensure accuracy of analytical data, and reproducibility of analytical procedures and instruments and investigate and resolve any quality non-conformance issues
  • Develop and validate new methods of analysis to add to the suite of services in response to industry demand
  • Supervise technical staff and students; establish goals and objectives, and provide performance feedback.
  • Provide mentorship and training for technical staff and students in laboratory procedures and instrument operation
  • Oversee the installation, calibration, and preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment including trouble-shooting, repairs, and arranging for service where necessary.
  • Make recommendations for and lead acquisition of new equipment and other resources to support the anticipated needs of the lab;
  • Prepare and send invoices to clients, track receivables, and deposit payments.
  • Maintain relationships with vendors and negotiate pricing for equipment and supplies
  • Participate in relevant local, regional and national industry meetings & conferences
  • Maintain awareness of trends in ingredients, products, and new technologies in the craft brewing industry
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with industry stakeholders including craft and commercial food & beverage processors, researchers in industry & academia, extension programs, and industry associations.
  • Develop and implement strategies for marketing and promotion of the Center’s programs and services
  • Develop and deliver educational and professional development training programs, seminars, & workshops
  • Work with the College’s Director of Corporate, Foundation and Government Relations to seek grant funding opportunities
  • Coordinate activities with other internal College departments such as Finance, Information Technology, Marketing & Communications, and Facilities as needed.
  • Conduct tours of the laboratory for clients, visitors, and prospective students
  • Comply with all applicable College, Federal, State, local, and associational regulations.
  • As a representative of the College, comport oneself in a professional manner at all times, both on and off campus
  • Participate in significant campus activities, including Welcome Weekend, Open House, True Blue Weekend, and Commencement Weekend.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include a Master's Degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Food Science, or Brewing Science or a Bachelor's Degree in a related field plus five years of experience working in a laboratory. Experience working in the brewing industry is an asset.

  • Knowledge of laboratory methods for the analysis of beer and brewing raw materials such as grain, malt and/or hops.
  • Knowledge of the processes and biochemistry of malting, brewing and distilling
  • Knowledge of the theory and principles analytical chemistry, experimental design, and statistics.
  • Knowledge of the principles of good laboratory practices and laboratory quality control procedures
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures
  • Significant experience in the operation and maintenance of modern laboratory instrumentation such as UV/VIS spectrophotometer, liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, discrete chemistry analyzer, continuous flow analyzer, digital densitometer, and/or near infrared spectrometer.
  • Experience with analytical method development and method validation
  • Experience in supervision and training of technical staff or students
  • Ability to evaluate and interpret data, and prepare summaries and reports using software applications such as Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Ability to plan, organize, and conduct research projects
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and client demands
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for prolonged periods of time, walk, reach with hands and arms, use hands with finger dexterity to manipulate tools or instruments, occasionally moving and lifting heavy or awkward material and equipment.

The employee must work with and be exposed to hazardous chemicals. The employee must wear appropriate personal protective clothing and/or equipment including protective eyewear, respiratory protection, and hearing protection when required. The employee must work in an environment where there is exposure to grain and flour dust.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include working with close vision and close attention to detail.
