Maintenance Technicians maintain, repair, and install equipment and components in the hospital, health centers, or other health care facilities at SEARHC. This position completes work orders for maintenance projects and completes all assigned preventive maintenance tasks performing a wide variety of general maintenance including special projects as directed. There may be on-call assigned by the Facility Manager as required by specific campuses. The position may travel to outlying communities to perform work.

This position requires working experience, knowledge and maintenance of commercial equipment and buildings used in the healthcare setting. Actions directly impact the ability for SEARHC to provide healthcare and the position is therefore a critical part of facility management‘s responsibility for ensuring all facilities and systems remain operational.

  • Preventive maintenance. Maintains systems, equipment, and tools as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor/ Facility Manager. Schedules and completes formal documentation of work completed including collecting data for entry into the PM program.
  • Troubleshooting and repair. Performs basic mechanical troubleshooting and repair of systems and components. Is able to troubleshoot and provide minor repairs of heating and cooling systems, boilers, plumbing systems, electrical systems and related equipment.
  • Grounds. Depending on location, maintains campus grounds including parking lot and entrance winter maintenance, summer lawn care, weed removal and gardening. These tasks will be assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor or Facility Manager.
  • Carpentry. Perform duties as assigned through written and verbal requests from the Maintenance Supervisor/ Facility Manager. Activities may include repairs and or installation for concrete work / repairs, floor coverings, installing doors, mounting cabinets, hanging items on walls, installing drop ceilings, drywall repair, and painting.
  • Work orders. Completes work orders assigned in a timely and professional manner according to priority.
  • Tool operation. Operates various shop tools, heavy equipment if applicable; has a working knowledge of table saws, rip saws, hand operated drills, grinders, gas powered equipment including weed eaters, chain saws, various power tools, etc. Knowledge of operating a forklift, dump truck and backhoe is preferred, but not required.
  • Locksmith. Capable of installing and repairing locks, door closers, making keys and working with lock cores. Responds to emergency requests, maintains records and locksmith supplies.
  • Supplies. Identifies and tracks supply needs, orders supplies and tools, researches costs, and provides information for cost effective purchases. Works directly with the Facility Manager or Maintenance Supervisor on special orders.
  • Vehicles. Maintains campus vehicles (fluids, cleanings, tire air, snow tires, and vehicle ferry transports).


  • High school diploma or GED preferred


  • One year in any combination of vocational school, documented experience in the maintenance or maintenance mechanic field, experience in commercial, institutional environment or equivalent, or class & certification in a related field.
  • Experience in maintenance or construction/renovation in a health care setting is preferred.


  • Must have a valid driver's license and remain insurable under the SEARHC automobile insurance policy.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Various mechanical systems.
  • Carpentry skills. The position must be able to complete minor repairs and installations.
  • Basic knowledge of lawn, garden, and general grounds care.

Skilled in:

  • Troubleshooting for mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Safe use of equipment, tools, manuals, and schematics.
  • Verbal and written communication that includes emailing or texting.

Ability to:

  • Complete basic preventive maintenance, troubleshoot, and repair basic mechanical systems and equipment with and without supervision to complete preventive maintenance independently once trained.
  • Troubleshoot and complete assigned work with minimal over-the-shoulder assistance.
  • Operate and maintain small engines and hydraulic equipment.
  • Walk extensively on uneven terrain or slippery surfaces, work while bending, stooping, or reaching, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Safely work on equipment in unstable conditions, climb in and out of dump trucks, loaders, forklifts, and pick-up trucks.
