15 As department lead in accordance with USCG, ISM, ABS, NSF, UA and Maritime requirements, the 1st Assistant Engineer will follow guidelines to insure Sexual Harassment, EEO and Safety regulations and compliance are being met. This position is responsible for any other duties deemed appropriate by the Supervisor and Chief or Relief Chief Engineer. Essential
25 Under direction of the Chief Engineer and Master, prepare the vessel for upcoming science missions and logistics in coordination with the Chief Mate, Port Captain, Port Engineer, Chief Steward, SMC Marine Superintendent, and Senior Marine Technician in. Assist and participate in all emergency drills and training, in coordination with vessel department leads to help ensure all operations are safe for crew and science party welfare, vessel material readiness and regulatory compliance. 30 Act as second in response, under the Chief Engineer, in assuming charge of the engineering plan onboard. Maintain responsibility for the effective, secure and safe operation of the entire vessel's engineering equipment and any other duties deemed appropriate by the supervisor. Collaborate with the Chief Engineer and Shipboard Science Systems Support personnel to ensure that all scientific equipment is maintained in proper working status. Provide day-to-day guidance in the operation and maintenance of the diesel electric propulsion system, its integrated power plant concept providing 5750 bhp of propulsion power through frequency drives, a/c main motors to two fully azimuthing z-drives. Responsible for the proper operation, maintenance and inspection of the main and auxiliary machinery, electrical, and mechanical equipment of the vessel. The 1st Assistant assists the Chief Engineer to assign and supervise the work in maintenance and repairs of engine department personnel for all safe, secure and proper workmanship of the vessel's equipment. 30 Ensure that engine department documentation and equipment logs are managed, maintained and submitted to the Chief Engineer. Under direction from the Chief Engineer, act as the lead for all administrative management of the data management system for all vessel propulsion, power and equipment. This includes but is not limited to: preventive maintenance, spare part inventory, purchasing, work orders, hull inspection and ship record conditions. Detect and recognize symptoms of impending malfunction or failure of all equipment and take positive action to restore to normal operating conditions. Essential
Ability to perform heavy labor and lifting. Ability to lubricate machinery and take readings of machinery and keep appropriate records. Advanced knowledge of basic and routine maintenance of vessels and equipment. Ability to make minor repairs to vessel mechanical equipment and hull. Ability to track and document engineering activities and parts and supplies. Ability to repair or replaces broken parts using precision and hand tools and arc or gas welders. Moderate knowledge in troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of vessel equipment to include electrical equipment and controllers. Knowledge and experience in operating cranes, winches, and use of various portable and fixed machine and hand tools. Expert knowledge and operation of main propulsion and auxiliary mechanical and electrical equipment. Advanced knowledge of a variety of electronic, electrical, computers and equipment. Knowledge of fuel and other consumables management. Knowledge of current U.S. Coast Guard rules and regulations, ISM, American Bureau of Shipping requirements and vessel stability; Maritime Laws; Current with all applicable laws, regulations, treaties, 33 CFR; 46 CFR; OSHA regulations.
At least one year as 1st Assistant Engineer with an Unlimited Horsepower Motor Oceans credential is preferred. Experience with azimuthing propulsion such as z-drives or azipods; a/c diesel electrical experience. Experience aboard Oceanographic research ships is preferred.
U.S. Coast Guard Unlimited Horsepower Motor 1st Assistant Engineer Merchant Mariner credential required. Certified in STCW, Survival Craft, HAZWOPER, advanced marine firefighting, universal refrigerant technician, first aid, and CPR certification and a valid US Passport. Additional license or certification may be required.
Salary Information:
This is a temporary position,grade 80 ( , step placement DOE. Pay also includes cruise leave cash out upon completion of contract. Flexible scheduling and sailing bonuses available.

Testing will be for the presence of cocaine, opiates, marijuana (THC), amphetamines and PCP (phencyclidine). Testing will be in accordance with the Department of Transportation Program and testing shall be in accordance with United States Coast Guard Drug and Alcohol Testing guidelines outlined in the Federal Register 46 C.F.R. 4, 5, and 16.
