The staff engineer, maintenance electrician will be required to diagnose, repair, replace and install plant electrical, electronics, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and support equipment. The Maintenance Engineer/Electrician operates and maintains all facility-related equipment, systems, structures, etc., and is responsible for keeping the electrical systems operating safely and at peak performance through maintenance, repairs and making the required adjustments. This position is also responsible for new installations and renovation work. The position must be available for rotating on-call and call back work when needed and may travel to outlying communities to perform work.

Comes with a sign-on bonus: $35.72-$47.38

  1. Ensures performance and provides oversight of advanced and technical maintenance which includes stationary and mobile mechanical, electrical, electronic, communications, air-conditioning, Boilers, Fire/Life Safety Systems, Sterilizers, HVAC equipment, and medical gas systems to provide heating, air-conditioning, steam, lights and power to the hospital. Ensures the comfort, safety and security of patients and staff through a diligent, professional and cost-effective approach to preventive maintenance, engineering and construction.
  2. Inspects and tests equipment and systems. Replace, install, and test electrical equipment, appliances and lighting systems as required. Maintains, inspects and tests the emergency generation systems. Staff engineer will maintain and repair HVAC controls and equipment to maximize efficiency levels and equipment longevity in all environmentally controlled areas.
  3. Perform preventive maintenance duties to equipment and physical structures of the hospital and campus while complying with applicable codes.
  4. Perform urgent corrective, routine and requisitioned repairs of the electrical, mechanical, heating, cooling and plumbing systems as required work orders.
  5. Maintain routine and specialized records of all inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs performed on any equipment or system.
  6. Direct Digital Controls. Utilizes the DDC system for monitoring and troubleshooting of critical building systems.
  7. Purchase all parts, supplies and equipment needed for normal routine day-to-day maintenance in a cost effective manner and make recommendations to upgrade obsolete electrical and building equipment.

Position Complexities

  • Special Effort Requirements, Mental: Ability to provide staff with guidance and assistance relevant to their program. Ability to make critical decisions regarding changing systems conditions or concerns. Ability to present complicated information in group forums. Ability to field questions and criticism from individuals and groups.
  • Special Effort Requirements, Physical. Ability to walk extensively on uneven terrain or slippery surfaces. Ability to work while bending, stooping, or reaching. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to safely work on equipment in unstable conditions.


  • A high school diploma or equivalent is necessary for the ability to read codes, standards, regulations, drawings, specifications, and for making basic math calculations.


  • 2 years of journeyman level experience preferred.
  • Experience with hospital maintenance is preferred.
  • Experience with electronic DDC controls systems is preferred.
  • Emergency diesel generator sets and emergency electrical feeders system experience is preferred.


  • Licensed as a journeyman electrician.
  • Current Certificate of Fitness as a journeyman electrician in the State of Alaska.
  • NICET certification preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and remain insurable under SEARHC automobile insurance policy preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge and practical application experience in electrical/electronics, PLC’s, A/C and D/C motors, drives and controls.
  • Working knowledge of fire alarm systems and NFPA 72.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, NFPA 99 for Healthcare Facilities.
  • Skills in troubleshooting and repair for mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Skill in electrical system design and installation.
  • Skill in HVAC troubleshooting and control.
  • Ability to work with computer systems for maintenance processes.
  • Ability to work independently and with limited direction and oversight.
  • Ability to maintain professional growth and development through in-service training, seminars, and workshops.
