Classification Title Skilled Craft Manager FLSA Exempt FTE 1.0 Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

This is highly skilled supervisory and administrative work in the design, construction, maintenance, and repair of mechanical devices, research instruments, and related equipment. This position is responsible for the management and direction of a central mechanical instrument shop engaged in the design, construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of a variety of mechanical devices used for data processing, instructional, and research purposes. This position participates actively with university faculty and research personnel in the design of mechanical equipment and related scientific apparatus. Work is carried out independently, but under the general supervision of a faculty member. Work is reviewed by observation of results. This position will travel to different campus buildings to repair equipment and pick up materials as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

In-depth knowledge of machining and fabrication techniques.

Proficient in the use of CAD software.

Proficient in the use of SolidWorks software.

Knowledge of operation using Faro Arm and 3-D Printing Ability to read and design from various forms of documents such as scientific publications and/or hand written documents.

Physical Demands

Lifting over 50 lbs., walking, standing, squatting, bending, carrying, lifting, stooping, pushing, pulling, repetitive hand motions.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

Operations Management:

  • Direct the daily operations of the Instrument Shop, including but not limited to, directing activities of personnel, performance management, time and attendance, annual reviews, and recruiting new employees.
  • Solicit services to customers and provide estimates of time and materials needed to repair, build, and modify instruments.
  • Fiscal oversight of Shop including identifying new ways to generate revenue while controlling expenses.

Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities

Designing and Engineering:

  • Meet with researchers to discuss and design custom specialty instrumentation and equipment, including but not limited to, vacuum chambers, radiation detection and GPR deployment vehicles, veterinary surgical equipment and 3D root phenotyping systems.
  • Research materials needed for compliance and integrity
  • Create design using Solid Works CAD and Gibbs Cam

Percentage of time 50 Duties/Responsibilities

Facility and Equipment Planning:

Acquire and implement appropriate technologies based on customer and shop needs, including but not limited to, research and procurement of software, equipment, and instrumentation designed to reduce cost by increasing efficiency.

Percentage of time 5 Duties/Responsibilities

Project Development and Management:

  • Develop estimates, quotes, and sales orders for each project following customer consultation
  • Assign and explain projects to Instrument Makers and Welders to ensure accuracy of the finished product.
  • Follow up with customer and instrument makers as needed to report and discuss status of project
